Only the stories of legends survive the world that made them.
"The Godless War. 2033. That's all most folks know, or all they let' themselves remember. Did'nt matter who you were, did'nt matter what you wanted outta life. War found you anyway. And if you were the type who just wanted no part of it, well, this world was'nt built with you in mind, I'll tell you that much.
The Covenant of the North. The Southern Pact. God against freedom, north against south. The great divide, they call it. If that split never happened, we'd still have somethin' worth holdin' onto.
But it did. And ain't no takin' it back.
Every war ends. Not every world survives it."
- Disciple Brant Jensen, Covenant of the North, 5th Division.
"Two years and still kicking.
I defected because I thought it would end. That reason alone should tell you how naive I was. 2035 and the Covenant is pushing harder than ever, more devout, more desperate, more willing. The Southern Pact is no different. Every month brings something larger, something worse. Weapons I did not think either side had. Tactics I do not want to describe here.
People back north still believe they are doing God's work. I believed that once. What changed my mind is not something I will write down. Some things you carry quietly.
The world did not end with the divide. It is ending slowly, in pieces, every time one side decides the other deserves less mercy than the last engagement.
I do not know what winning looks like anymore. I am not sure either side does either.
The war does not end when the guns go quiet. It ends when there is nothing left worth the silence."
- Private First Class Cheri Val, defector, Southern Pact 3rd Division.
"I have been asked many times what the Unfortunate War felt like from where I stood. I never had a good answer. I still do not. But I am old now, and old men write things down.
2027. The divide was still forming. Like a wound that had not yet decided how deep it wanted to go. Some of us believed, truly believed, that if we moved then, with conviction and with God at our backs, we could close it before it became something permanent. Something generational.
We were not wrong to try. I still hold that.
The Unfortunate War was not grand. It was not the kind of conflict men write ballads about. It was small, and ugly, and exhausting in the way that only a war fought over an idea can be. Men died for a future that did not arrive. The south did not yield. The north did not break them. We simply... stopped. Both sides put down what they were carrying and walked back to their corners.
I commanded twelve thousand souls across three engagements. I brought most of them home. The ones I did not, I know their names. I will know them until I do not know anything at all.
We called it the Unfortunate War because nobody wanted to call it what it really was. A failure. A warning nobody listened to.
Six years later, the Godless War proved us right. And I have never felt worse about being right in all my life."
- Archon Moses Ismo, Covenant of the North, Northern Command.
